MASTER of Physiotherapy (MPT)

INTRODUCTION

The Master of Physiotherapy course is a 2-year fulltime program leading to the degree that equips the student with analytical, evidence based learning skills. The program is generic in nature and has a component of additional learning of one area leading to an elective in that area.

 

OBJECTIVES

At the end of the completion of Master of Physiotherapy, the Postgraduate will be able to:

  1. Apply advanced knowledge of clinical skills in problem solving.
  2. Gather and interpret information within a holistic framework pertaining to health.
  3. Design, implement and monitor appropriate therapeutic interventions.
  4. Apply scientific principles to the concepts of health, illness and disability.
  5. Promote health.
  6. Appraise the social and political context of health care.
  7. Undertake independent research projects.
  8. Promote Physiotherapy education.
  9. Appraise action and social skills of self and others.

ELIGIBILTY

Candidates admitted into the Master of Physiotherapy course should have passed the BPT degree examination with a minimum of 40% aggregate to appear for the entrance exam. The entrance exam will be conducted in the month of June every year.

COURSE STRUCTURE

The duration of the certified study for the Master of Physiotherapy course shall be a full time course extending over a period of two academic years for the award of the degree.

I YEAR MPT will have the following subjects:

i)Basic Sciences which includes Biomechanics, Exercise/Electrophysiology, Physical and Functional diagnosis.

ii)Research Methodology and Biostatistics.

II YEAR MPT will have the following subjects:

i)Physiotherapeutics

ii)Elective-

Srinivas University will be providing the following electives:

  1. MPT in Orthopaedics

– Manual therapy

– Sports physiotherapy

  1. MPT in Neurosciences
  2. MPT in Cardiopulmonary Sciences
  3. MPT in Paediatrics
  4. MPT in Community Based Rehabilitation
  5. MPT in Women’s Health

Each elective will have 6 seats with a total number of 36 seats.

University examination will be conducted at the end of every academic year.

1st YEAR MPT:

THEORY-

PAPER 1: BASIC SCIENCES (100 MARKS)

PAPER 2: RESEARCH METHODOLOGY AND BIOSTATISTICS (100 MARKS)

PRACTICALS-

PRACTICAL I- 100 MARKS

 

2nd YEAR MPT:

THEORY-

PAPER 1: PHYSIOTHERAPEUTICS (100 MARKS)

PAPER 2: ELECTIVE (100 MARKS)

PAPER 3: RECENT ADVANCES (50 MARKS)

PRACTICALS-

PRACTICAL II- 100 MARKS

DISSERTATION- 50 MARKS

  1. A candidate registered for two years Post Graduate full time degree course must qualify in the Examinations within four years of the date of his/ her admission.
  2. A candidate is required to put in minimum 80% of attendance in both theory, practicals and clinicals separately (wherever applicable) in each subject before admission to the examination. Condonation of shortage of attendance up to a maximum of 10% in the prescribed eligible attendance for admission to examination rests with the discretionary powers of the Principal of the colle
  3. Examination will commence in the first week of August every year. Re- examination for the failed candidates will be conducted in the month of February every year.
  4. The candidate must obtain 50% of marks in the University theory examination, 50% marks in University practical examination and 50% aggregate in Theory, Practical and /or Viva voce and internal evaluation marks taken together.
  5. A successful candidate-

>75%- I CLASS WITH DISTINCTION (1ST ATTEMPT)

60-75%- I CLASS

>50%- II CLASS

  1. Each year shall not have less than 250 working da
  2. Principal shall declare 20 days of vacation in in the first year to the student The period of vacation can be decided by the Principal.
  3. The Vice Chancellor shall have the powers to accept any migration/transfer case which he may deem to be fit.

CAREER OPPORTUNITIES:

Physiotherapists can obtain a doctorate degree and become involved in research.

Physiotherapists that demonstrate a high level of skill, knowledge and competence in their work may find many opportunities for growth, such as moving into supervisory or management positions, teaching positions, or they may decide to open their own, independent physiotherapy clinic or service.

Physiotherapists are required in each department of a hospital, be it ICU or geriatrics, and they can also choose to work independently or be part of a multidisciplinary team. Some hospitals choose to pay physiotherapists according to the number of patients he or she sees. Initial remuneration of physiotherapists varies from place to place. In India, the starting salary ranges from Rs. 7,000 to Rs.30,000 per month. Generally, private hospitals provide remuneration ranging between Rs. 5,000 to Rs.15,000 per month for a fresher.

In government hospitals, a Junior Physiotherapist can earn approximately Rs. 30,000 per month.  The progression in designations is Physiotherapist followed by Senior Physiotherapist earning about Rs. 45,000 per month, followed by Superintendent earning about Rs.60,000-70,000 per month and then Chief Physiotherapist earning about Rs.80,000 per month.

The average salary for teaching jobs in Physiotherapy varies from Rs. 10,000 to Rs.40,000 per month. The remuneration for established private practitioners can be nearly Rs. 20,000 to Rs.40,000 per month.  Physiotherapists can also start their own private practice. Remuneration for Physiotherapists abroad varies from Rs. 50,000 to Rs.2,00,000 per month.
